There are numerous types of dental radiography, each of then having specific destinations and advantages and disadvantages.
Orthopantomogram (OPG)- is a panoramic radiological representation of the oral cavity. It offers the medic the ensemble image of the patient's clinical situation without the sensitivity information. The orthopantomogram amplifies the object with 25-35%. OPG contains both dental arcades and shows a pretty precise report between the teeth and the next anatomical formations: maxillar sinuses, mandibular canals. The moment of dental radiography is in beginning of treatment, and it is very important for the assessment of a correct diagnosis. Many times, retroalveolar radiography is necessary. with a smaller dimension but with a more detailed image.
Retroalveolar dental radiography- is a radiological image that presents only a few teeth from the dental arcade. Is a type of radiography that gives precise information but for a a limited area of the oral cavity. This type of dental radiography is indicated for dental solitary lesions, for example in case of caries or for verifying a treatment. a small base that contains the radiological film is attached to the patient's teeth. The dental radiology nurse asks the patient to stay still for a few seconds, as much as is necessary for the film to print the image. The film is developed in a few minutes. This type of dental radiography shows detailed information about the dental contact points. This type of dental radiography is exemplified .
Bitewing dental radiography- the image presents just a few teeth from the dental arcade. This type of dental radiography gives precise information just for limited areas of the oral cavity. This type of dental X-ray is indicated for teeth exploration from their occlusal part. A small base that contains the film is placed between the patient's teeth, which is bitten on by the patient. The X-ray apparatus is somewhere over the patient's head. The dental radiology nurse asks the patient to stay still for a few seconds, until the image is recorded. The film develops in a few minutes.
Digital dental radiography (in two dimensions)- is the newest way to do a dental radiography. Because of the reduced volume of the radiological apparatus but also of radiation quantity, this can be used near the dental chair. This facilitates the treatment and also the observation of the treatment stages. The dental film is replaced with a sensor that has the asspect of a dental film. This captures the images and communicates them to a computer, that displays them on a screen. The major advantage of this type of radiography is ergonomics.
The major disadvantage of a classic dental X-ray is the two dimension visualization of a three dimension structures. In the last few years systems of digital dental radiology were developed. These have the advantage of a small dose of radiation usage, but also of the possibility to record images in an electronic format, the transformation in 3D images of the radiography area being easier .
